Who i sgoing on the LAA Electrics course

Post by Gavin Bell » Thu Oct 07, 2010 8:44 pm

Hi Guys,

Am attending the aero electrics course on 16th.
Will be leaving from home (near Breighton) North Yorks, by air if weather favourable, by road if not. Anyone needing a lift either way, drop me a line

Hello All,

A slight hijack of this thread. I am going to the Electrics course by motorbike from Bristol. Any recommendations where to stay on the Friday night?

See you there Gavin.

Thanks, Alan.

There's a pub in Whitfield, the little village you go through to get to the airfield from the A43. It's called the Sun and it does B&B and food. Cheap and cheerful. Penny at the office will have contact details if you need.

There is a full list of local accommodation on the LAA website:

The Premier Inn had a fire recently and only has half the rooms open. We stay at the Sun Inn in Whitfield, 01280 850 232. Only 5 rooms so book early. Cosy, good food, good value. and closest to the airfield.

Just a word of warning - Turweston Flight will not allow any inbound aircraft before 9am on the Saturday. I asked and was told not possible to land earlier. Since the class starts at 9am, I'll be driving up in the morning. I did ask the LAA office whether they considered this when setting the start time, but didn't get a reply.

Response from Tutor:

I have decided not to change the timings for a couple of reasons:

· We are very short of time and cannot afford to lose 30 minutes.

· I can see people trying to fly, leaving it to the last minute and getting weather bound and not being able to attend, or arriving very late with all the attendant frustrations.

· In the winter we finish in the dark, so people could not fly out again anyway.

Thanks for the recommendations, in the end I stayed at The King's Head in Syresham a couple of miles towards Silverstone off the old A43. It had a minimal decor, unlike a typical country pub, no horse brasses or similar. The rooms were in a converted stable building next door and were functional but had everything I needed, like big towels. The staff could not have been more enthusiastic and helpful. Also I had a good pint of Greene King IPA on draught ... so I had a few more.

The electrics course gets my recommendation, informative, entertaining, I learnt much and it was good to see what standards can be attained in homebuilts. If you have an interest in your aircraft's electrics then this course is worth your while.

Regards, Alan.

Ditto what Alan has said about the course. I am now the proud owner of a set of decent ratchet crimp pliers and quality terminals :-)

Great course, delivered well.

Trust you got back without freezing Alan?

Chilled but not freezing. I was cracking on a bit to keep the trip short so hopefully I did not pass too many cameras.

Have you found any good wire strippers to match your ratchet crimp pliers?
