Lyneham CTR/CTA no longer 24/7

Post by FlyOnTrack » Thu May 26, 2011 9:54 pm

I was alerted to this today and got confirmation from the Lyneham Satco, but waited for the NOTAM just in case. Lyneham CTR/CTA no longer H24, but of course the ATZ is still that. CTR/CTA hours now align with ATC Unit hours, which are Monday-Friday 8:00 LOCAL to 23:59 LOCAL (unless of course another notam says 'different').

I've asked if the current NOTAM (issued 26th May) can be made a little more direct rather than indirect about what it is trying to say, whilst formally correct, it's worded in such a way that means everyone has to do a 'task' with the AIP to come to the right answer. I understand there will be a re-wording soon.

Q) EGTT/QACCH/IV/NBO/AE/035/065/5130N00159W006
B) FROM: 11/05/26 16:45C) TO: 11/08/26 23:59

E) CLASS D - CONTROLLED AIRSPACE, AMEND TO READ:
REFLECT IN THE LIST THAT NOTE 2 ALSO APPLIES TO LYNEHAM CONTROL
ZONE/CONTROL AREA.

LYNEHAM AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL UNIT HOURS OF OPERATION ARE:
0700-2259 MON TO FRI (INCLUDING PUBLIC HOLIDAYS). SUBJECT TO
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS THE AERODROME MAY OPERATE OUTSIDE OF THESE
HOURS. ATZ REMAINS H24.
ENR 1-4-5 2.4.1.1 REFERS
That really is very enigmatic! It really saddens me when notams are made difficult to understand without doing additional research.

That's much improved, Irv. Thanks for getting it changed.

Perhaps those writing Notams need to be reminded regularly to make them intelligible just as regularly as pilots need to be reminded not to infringe!

The recent Notam relating to the US Presidents visit was a classic - just a long list of co-ordinates for two irregular areas with no reference to a source with a graphical representation. The chances of the average leisure pilot taking the trouble to plot them on a map are remote. If pilots are required not to infringe, those that issue these Notams should be required to make them intelligible.
