grass strip database add-on

Post by rans6andrew » Mon Jul 25, 2011 11:51 am

I have just bought my first Garmin aviation GPS and find it is short of a lot of the smaller airfields' data. On just one day's flying I note that Whittles, Bossington and Bowerchalk do not appear on the map as you fly over them. I guess that the Jeppesen database ignores any airfields which are not airbus/Jumbo friendly

I remember a few years ago that there was a handy farm strip database for Garmin 196/296 units produced by Jonathan @ NATS. Does anyone know if this is still available for download?

Where from?

Does it work with Aera 500?

How do you install? (in words of few syllables, I am new to the Garmin way of doing stuff)

Ta,

Rans6...

Tough, Andrew,

My AWARE shews all of them (yesterday).

Hi Andrew, If John cannot help get back to me as I have converted Cubs old list to GPX files which are quite transportable to any GPS or mapping software. It will be a bit out of date now, but airstrips don't tend to move much :)
Bossington is not on the unlicensed list or gliding list. If you have some details I can add it.

I think Whittles is closed, certainly the only aircraft that was there has moved to Popham a year or so ago with the same owner

Ian, I have been offered a copy of a database by John Clarke, I don't know if it is the same one but I would still be interested in your .gpx file. I don't know what format the Aera 500 expects to have loaded so........

Is the file editable/updateable?

I'll send you an email in a PM.

Bossington airfield is probably a "private PPR" strip near to Middle Wallop. I noticed it on the 250,000 chart as we flew over that way at the weekend. It used to belong to John Fairey (him of Fairey Aviation ascendency) but since he died in an aircraft accident a couple of years ago I suspect that his family has either sold or leased it to a new operator who has put it onto the CAA chart system.

With regard to Whittles, a good friend has taken the lease and has planning permission for 3 T hangars (all taken) which are being erected this month. The airfield is open for traffic but there is nothing there to see. No club room, no loos, no radio so don't all come rushing.
