Jodel D18 wingspar ply splices

I am building a D18 in Australia and have acquired some components from a previous project. The spar is partly assembled.
My question relates to the scarfing of the ply webs.
The plans and building notes (Frank Rogers plans) emphasise the importance of the correct direction of the grain in the webs, and these have been maintained correctly.
The plans show scarfs in the front and rear webs. The direction of the scarfs just inboard of the dihedral break are shown as being parallel to the face grain. The scarf just outside the undercarriage position on the front web is at right angles to the spar (ie at 45 degrees to the grain).
The previous builder has put another scarf between these positions but at 90 degrees to the face grain direction. Is this acceptable, or should I remove and replace the webs with scarfs parallel to the grain direction.
Any comments would be gratefully received.
