I have bought a second hand item for my engine from the States and this has been dispatched by the vendor. Value is around £170 plus p&p,VAT etc. I had an End Use number many years ago, but this has long since expired and the procedure is different now, anyway.
Has anyone recent experience of completing an application for End Use Relief?
I have downloaded Notice 770 & Forms C1317, C88 & BOR286 ( to claim a refund of any duty retrospectively ) and have confirmed that the CN code is 8409100010. It may be that I shall need to buy further items from the States from time to time, so an End use Relief number would be useful to me, rather than using form C88, which appears to be mainly for one off transactions.
Most items on the forms are easy enough - even for me - to deal with, but there are a few that aren't exactly obvious.
Any advice appreciated!
Ian

Re: Importing from US: End Use Relief procedures.
It's a long time since I obtained an end-user number but in those days it was necessary to know the Customs Tarrif codes for the items being imported. I discovered that my local library had a copy of the tarrif codes book in their reference section.
It was necessary to get the US exporter to use an exact phrase on the export documents. It was along the lines of "Goods elligible for end-use relief..." and was set out in Notice 770.
Good luck,
Harry

Many thanks Harry & I'll note the phraseology for the supplier/vendor to use on their customs form.
I think I now have the correct code - these are available on the customs webpage(s) and I've also confirmed with customs by phone.

Re: Importing from US: End Use Relief procedures.
Ian,
I imported some parts a few months ago (around $5000 worth). If you are only an occasional importer then you just need to complete the necessary HM R and C declaration (Ithink that is waht it was called). I found Fed Ex (the shipper used by Univair) really helpful in providing me with contact phone numbers etc. However, the import agent won't release any goods until all charges have been paid!
