PM sitting in outbox

Can someone explain why a PM will sit in the outbox rather than actually sending?

Ian, at the same time the message appears in your outbox it also appears in the recipients inbox. When they open the message to read it the message will disappear from your outbox. That's just the way the phpBB forums work.
