“And not all LAA members have to access Notams and the weather, they don't all fly.”

I would have to take issue with that in this case. The only group of people who have to read the engineering section are the owners of LAA aircraft and I would guess that 99% of owners are pilots who have to check notams?

Rod, we have over 8000 members and not all of them are pilots, let alone owners of aircraft. Sure all the owners and pilots have to check Notams and weather, but maybe 3000 plus of our members dont.

I read the eningeering section despite not owning a LAA permit aircraft. I like know how things work -- at a guess plenty of others do too, whether they ever apply the knowledge or not.

Brian,

Congrats on the quality of the mag.

It is true not all our fellow members have internet access, but it is also true that pretty well 100% of our potential members do have access.

If we are to encourage more young members we have to reach them, the paper mag only reaches existing members, the web is our major opportunity to engage those who may have an interest in flying but no idea how to get started.

The current LAA web site is a complete nonsense, it's a real shame that you don't use your obvious talent at publishing to make the LAA web site equally as good.

Come on Brian, time for you to start on bringing the web site up to scratch, it cannot be left to well meaning amateurs, it needs your talent.

blimey - am I the only one who dislikes the new mag format!

True we are spared the reports on exec jets and twins etc [ so far] but in other respects we now look just like all the others flying mags, and top gear and kit car and...... - same style layout - same 'showdown' 'head to head '[ no doubt we will soon have a 'shootout']. headlines, promo pieces for new products - since when has acf 50 been new!? If I want this kind of stuff I can read my sons magazines.

Brian please give the art editors/designers a kicking and get back to a sensible sized typeface, black on white, no graph paper/coloured backgrounds. It may not be modern maybe it is less professional whatever that means but it was easy to read distinctive and I'm not aware that anybody was complaining about the previous format - in fact the feedback seemed universally positive before this change

Well done Brian, nicely presented magazine, and that's exactly the way I like it.

A magazine can be picked up/put down, thrown in the back of the car (without fear of the local 'scrote' breaking in to 'nick' it) or read it in the loo!
try that with a lap top!

Aha! but! Not so sure about this showdown stuff, dread to think what will be the conclusion on the forth coming Jabiru, Jodel, Piper PA 28 BIG TEST.

I've owned two of the three and flown the third, they remind me of our pets, a dog, cat and horse - all got 4 legs - one neighs one purrs and the other one's a dog.

No Josher, you are not alone I am afraid I do not go along with the adullation of the new format magazine. The photographs in the article on Dunkeswell just did nothing for me. The article on the Rearwin was much better.

Why do we have to try and "ape" other magazines? If we look a bit "old fashioned", so what?

Like patowalker I am puzzled as to how a price difference of approx £20,000 between Sierra and Sport Cruiser can become "only" £5,000 because they are priced in Euros and US Dollars respectively. The price asked by the manufacturers of the kits are the prices you have to pay for the aircraft - and the difference is £20,000 when converted to Sterling. The flight test is therefore not comparing equivalent aircraft, although their specifications are very similar. An indication perhaps of just what good value the Sport Cruiser is. I am glad I ordered one!
