I have just purchased my first microlite aircraft, a Denny Kitfox. I am considering re-registering it as a Group A aircraft. Can anyone tell what the advantage of that would be? Also, what permission do I need and how do I obtain it for travel to France?

Tom, >450kg MTOW basically. The aircraft won't need special permission (at the moment) to fly in France but don't forget you will need at least a PPL to fly it abroad if you upgrade it. While a microlight NPPL(M) works in France a NPPL(A) doesn't.
