Setting up an Ellison carb on a VW engine

I have a Barry Smith 1835 VW engine fitted with a Ellison carb which runs OK at idle and full throttle but runs roughly at mid-range settings about 2000rpm. Since this is a new installation the carb may not have been set up correctly so if anyone knows of any "idiosyncrasies" that this carb might have I'd be interested to know before I start stripping things apart to find the cause.
