I can remember mucking around with dowsing rods in my teens. I cannot 'prove' they work, but we did try a few unscientific experiments. The one I remember was the dowser was blindfolded and an object placed under the rods (both steel). The Bike Clips (what we had to hand) caused the rods to cross but not plastic object.
We then went off hunting for aircraft parts at known crash sites. We found quite a lot but IIRC that was mostly from Mk1 Eyeball. I do recall tracking a linear object across a field only to find it was a concrete drainage pipe, not a whole Albermarle as we were naively hoping.

Metal detector would have been better, but they were not in common circulation in the mid 70's

This is amazing... this forum is almost dead. go on any other aviation forum and there is lively debate about a million aviation subjects.
Come on here and ask aviation questions or try to ruffle up any support and you hit a stone wall.
Come on here and talk about water and it runs to 2 pages in no time!
Maybe the LAA ought to take up plumbing!

If it's any consolation John the other forums I subscribe to a very quiet as well.
Even the normally very active Flyer foum is a bit thin on GA content, there is even a thread about a bloke wanting a slap :D

Anything to attract "customers" to the forum is OK by me.

You're right, promised one is more accurate.

Gary,

I tried it a couple of times and it worked each time for me. Where I live, there are professional "diviners" that you can hire for a job. They do it all the time and wouldn't be in business if it didn't work or had a high rate of failure.

Nice one helipaddy.
This was a good find thanks for this!

Dowsing is the action of a person--called the dowser--using a rod, stick or other device--called a dowsing rod, dowsing stick, doodlebug (when used to locate oil), or divining rod--to locate such things as underground water, hidden metal, buried treasure, oil, lost persons or golf balls, etc. Since dowsing is not based upon any known scientific or empirical laws or forces of nature, it should be considered a type of divination and an example of magical thinking. The dowser tries to locate objects by occult means.

The only one i can relate to here is the doodlebug... this was shot down i think by spitfires when they was coming over the dover coast!

WOW :The dowser tries to locate objects by occult means!

gary,
how would anyone know if "static in the body" stops the effect? And where's the scientific proof this works at all? Anecdotal examples and personal testimonials are not proof that dowsing works. Face it dude, this stuff is baloney. Otherwise, why doesn't anyone cash in on The Amazing Randi's $1,000,000 offer?

My Advice, hire a mini digger, have one man by the stop cock, and dig.....it ain't rocket sicence and you will find your pipe a damn site quicker  !!! Say hello to Andy T for me if he is on the island!

gary,
The only truly reliable way to find underground pipes is to exploit that standard principle of all sciences, Murphy's Law. Get a backhoe and start digging somewhere without permits or site surveys. A power auger or a "Ditch witch" trencher will do equally well; it just needs to be big and destructive, and slow to stop when encountering something breakable underground. You'll be amazed at what you can find -- water pipes, gas lines, electrical utilities -- the possibilities are endless! This works especially well if you have something that makes sparks, too, so that you don't have to wait for the smell to help you detect the gas lines (extra points if you can get an electrical line and a gas line in the same stroke).
