Permit to Fly exemptions for Jersey and Guernsey

Good news. derekf on the Flyer forum has kindly highlighted that the Director of Civil Aviation for Jersey and Guernsey has has issued exemptions to the Jersey and Guernsey ANOs to permit flight within Jersey and Guernsey airspace by UK registered aircraft in respect of which a national permit to fly is in force. This is effective from 14 August 2009.

This covers Alderney as well, as it is within Bailiwick of Guernsey airspace.

derekf suggests that NPPL exemptions may be next.

Following an initiative by Mike Barnard, I took over negotiation with the Director General Civil Aircraft for the CI on overflight by permit aircraft, and LAA aircraft in particular. At his request the LAA produced the documentation to demonstrate the safety and airworthiness standards of permit aircraft which gave him the evidence needed to issue an exemption.

Of particular note, I sent him the last document at 10:00 on Friday and he issued the exemption at 15:57 the same day! Would that everything happened so quickly.

Positive news and not a whinge in sight....at last, well done, and an LAA incentive too. More places to fly in a permit to fly aircraft...I hope to have another soon 8) !!

Great News!
But I have a question. As the Channel Islands airspace is Class A, does this mean we need a mode S transponder to fly there? Or is it not quite Class A in that respect. Hope so!

"Further to the public consultation on the Phase 2 proposals to extend the rules for carriage and operation of transponders (see below for background to phased approach), the CAA has now published its final decision, in which it intends to introduce:

*
Regulation to require all aircraft (except gliders) flying within Class A to C controlled airspace to carry and operate a Mode S transponder with effect from 1 October 2009.
*
An extension of the Mode S transponder carriage regulations to include gliders with effect from 6 April 2012.
*
Amendments to the transponder carriage regulations applicable to Self-Launching Motor Gliders (SLMG) to bring these into line with the regulations for all other gliders.
*
There will still be the option for air traffic control to allow non-transponder equipped flights into the airspace, providing safety and efficiency levels can be assured."

Perhaps Jersey will still allow?
