JAR or UK License?

Post by Nigel Hitchman » Mon Sep 28, 2009 5:22 pm

I have to renew my ATPL shortly and am "offered" to either renew it as a UK ATPL or change it to a JAR ATPL by the CAA.

Does anyone know if there are particular advantages to either, Im interested from the point of using it for PPL privilidges as well as job wise. (I guess the company will only pay for the UK renewal!)

One disadvantage of changing I guess is that my FAA Private based on my UK PPL wil become invalid if I change to JAR?

Thanks

Nigel,

The "company" will pay for either!

The main disadvantage is the following:

UK ATPL:
In built IMC privileges, therefore no IMC test required.

JAR-FCL ATPL:
No in built IMC privileges. Your IR is a multi-pilot IR. Therefore, if you want to use IMC privileges (including reduced VFR minima) in your SEP, you have to do an IMC test every 2 years.

No brainer to me!
One disadvantage of changing I guess is that my FAA Private based on my UK PPL wil become invalid if I change to JAR?
I think you're wrong on that one, as your lifetime UK PPL is still valid, and you will retain the same CAA reference number for your ATPL.
