Government interest in farmstrips

Post by G.Dawes » Wed Jul 08, 2009 9:23 pm

I am horrified to watch Scene South East our local regional news program, to see an interview with LORD CARLISLE, the anti terrorist minister or somthing. It was held at the new Bizjet terminal at Biggin Hill.
They were crowing on about the super security that the customers have to go through etc etc. Then it changed to a view of the little C150 taxying out, and the subject changed to , Of course there is no control over these smaller aircraft and there are no checks on them yet, they are a security danger. They then cut to a map with our farmstrip on, going on to say that some aircraft are being used out of illegal farm fields with no control at all over who they are,or what they are doing. I got the impression that something is going to become a 'NEW INITIATIVE', to stop terror attack.
The BBC had obviously taken some little research to make a Shock Horror story.
Please someone get on to them at the BBC and get the other side over quickly that this is a hobby, leisure pastime not a way of killing thousands as of yet, untapped by the demented.
My local strip owner recently had the Head of the local anti terrorist squad harping on about the danger of strips, but reacted well when told that everyone there is known and any strange behaviour would be noticed immediately. He hadn't thought of that.
Stopping strip flying would kill our sport the same as banning leisure boats on canals would, to that pastime.
Did anyone else see the article and what did they think to it?
Regards
Graham Dawes :(

Graham
I saw this on the London BBC news and was as shocked as you. With the guy at Biggin making the comment that 'some small aircraft fly out of farmers fields with no security at all' it makes you wonder where this is leading.
Call me naive, but I always thought a 20 ton lorry stuffed with explosives could do a lot more damage than a piper cub. I really do resent the powers that govern this great country of ours regarding us as some sort of no good lowlifes.

Didn't see the programme but Rod, who posts on the board, mentioned he had heard horror stories about Tory plans for strip security. I raised the issue with Roger Hopkinson at the last EC and he said that any such plans would come via DfT, with whom we have a close liason and would thus get to know about them in plenty of time to react. No such info currently coming our way.

What about a fully explosives laden canel boat taken to Paddington basin or out to the Camden lock. I bet it could carry heaps more explosive than any cessna 150 or even a lorry.

This is how aviation was destroyed in Australia, security fear after security fear. Airside security passes and loads of barbed wire fences.

Has anyone else been contacted by their local Plod? One came to our farm strip and asked to see in the hangar, took down the reg of our planes and left his card asking us to contact him.
So I did out of curiosity. I haven't spoken to him yet but by e-mail he says he just wants an extra pair of eyes on the lookout......for what??? I'm unlikely to see anyone except my hangar partner. I've no idea what's happening at other strips......where's this all leading to?

HM R and C has always been interested in strips. They used to visit my friend's airstrip every year or so just to say "hello". They also carry out spot checks at my local airfield - a stamp is placed on the booking in/out pages to show their attendance.
I think it is just a gentle ramping up of their responsibilities and visibility regarding border protection and letting us know "they" are out there keeping an eye on things. Police also assist with those responsibilities.

I have got no problem with HMR&C or the police visiting the strip, it's good to know they are around in some cases. The point of the original post is that the TV news item about Lord Carlisle's views referred to light aviation as the 'soft underbelly' of the UK's war on terror. That seems to me a call for more control/regulation/restrictions/interference with our completely lawful activities. Yet another layer of restrictive bureaucracy is one thing that GA doesn't need.
